Frequently Asked Questions

Food Sensitivity

How do you test for allergies?
If you have any of the allergy symptoms, you can talk to your doctor. The most reliable and common test for allergies is a blood test. A doctor can tell your allergen after the tests.

How can you treat allergies?
It is easy to treat allergies once the allergist knows the allergens that are causing your symptoms. Treatment plan can include avoiding allergens, taking medications, and taking allergy shots. The good news is some of the children allergens can be out-grown.

What do I do if I have allergies?
Always be prepared for accidental ingestion by carrying self-injectable epinephrine. Do not leave home without an epinephrine auto-injector. Make sure you are comfortable with how to use your injection. Get medical help immediately.

What is the best substitute of Milk for children with milk allergy?
Doctors recommend extensively hydrolyzed, casein-based formulas like Alimentum and Nutramigen. These formulas contain broken down protein that is different from normal milk protein. It is not likely to cause an allergic reaction. If the child is not allergic to soy, the doctor may recommend a soy-based formula. The good news is most children can out-grow milk allergy.

What are the most known allergic medicines?
The most common are antibiotics like penicillin, aspirin, and ibuprofen. There are also other things like chemotherapy treatments and monoclonal antibody therapy.

Scoliosis

What are the common spine disorders?

What causes Scoliosis and what are the symptoms?
The cause is still unknown, but doctors believe that Scoliosis is hereditary. Good news is that it can be treated. Its symptoms may include the bending of the back (abnormal curve of the spine) which a doctor can diagnose it through an x-ray or it can be seen physically when a person’s head doesn’t seem to be centered, and sometimes pain for some people.

What will happen if scoliosis is not treated on time?
If you don’t get the treatment on time, it might lead to chest pain and heart issues. The curve would grow and restrict breathing and interfere with the lungs functions. A doctor will need to see your x-rays to determine the measuring of the curves before treatment. It is easy to treat a small curve without surgery, but curves greater than 50 degrees will need surgery to return to its normal posture.

Does the brace really work?
Yes. Some braces can only prevent the growth of the, but our Spinecor Scoliosis Brace is a dynamic brace that can support the spine and provide progressive correction of Idiopathic Scoliosis from 15 degree Cobb angles and above.

Who gets scoliosis?
People with a family history of scoliosis are more likely to get it. It happens in a younger age to adolescent and mostly to girls than boys.

Pain Management

Is there treatment for Chronic and Acute Pain?
Yes, there is treatment for chronic and acute pain most doctors will provide medication but medications do not always work. If you want to get rid of chronic pain: chiropractic care and Spinal rehabilitation combined with natural injections to remove scar tissue and restore normal function.

Stress Management

How does stress affect your health?
Stress can affect your health by putting your body in a level of distress, which is a negative stress reaction. Distress disturbs the internal balance of the body and equilibrium, leading to physical problems such as headaches, upset stomachs, high blood pressure and problems sleeping. It can lead to physical and emotional problems as well, causing depression, panic attacks, and forms of anxiety. Stress can also affect your health leading to six causes of death: heart disease, cancer, lung ailments, accidents, cirrhosis of the liver, and worse suicide.

What are some warning signs of stress?
If your stress level is high, there are many warning signs that need to be considered. The warning signs are: Racing heartbeat, general aches and pains, dizziness, trembling or shaking, weight loss or gain, irritability, impatience, and forgetfulness. You should always be on the lookout for stress and stress management techniques.

How Do I Reduce Stress?
In addition to keeping a stress journal, here are some other ways to reduce stress in your life: keep a positive attitude, eat a well-balanced meal every day, make time for fun and relaxation by going for a walk or playing with your dog, adopt a healthy lifestyle by reducing your caffeine and sugar intake, and exercise regularly so that your body can fight off the stress.

Chiropractic Care

What is chiropractic all about?
Chiropractic is a natural preventive and rehabilitative healthcare that concentrates on keeping people well. In fact, research has shown that patients under chiropractic care have stronger immune systems, and don’t get sick nearly as much as the normal population. Doctors of chiropractic attempt to get to the cause of a health problem, rather than just treat the symptoms. The primary focus of chiropractic is the detection, reduction and correction of spinal misalignments called subluxations. What is a subluxation? Sub-luxation, Sub- means less than, luxation means dislocation, so its less than a dislocation. It is a slight shift of one, or more bones. At first this subluxation does not cause pain. That is why once you feel better with treatment you should continue to come in to get your tune-up, to keep your spine flexible, to avoid subluxations that cause pain, spasms, fatique and contribute to injury.

What does a chiropractor do?
A doctor of chiropractic locates and removes small misalignments in the spinal column known as the vertebral subluxation complex (VSC). VSC is also known as spinal nerve stress and when present interfers with the nerve impulses at the level of the subluxation ( see above for explanation of a subluxation). How can this happen? When the bones first go out of alignment ( a subluxation), there is no pain, but after awhile you start to get muscle spasms, pain, and fatique. So once you start to feel better with care, continue your treatment, because you might not realize you have a subluxation.

Chiropractors use carefully controlled and directed pressure to restore spinal bones to their normal motion and position. This procedure is known as a chiropractic adjustment.

What conditions can a chiropractor treat?
Chiropractors treat a wide variety of conditions including but not limited to:
lower back pain
whiplash
neck pain
scoliosis
headaches
torticollis
sciatica
sprain/strains
shoulder and arm pain
herniated discs
thoracic outlet
referred pain syndromes
It is unfortunate that the majority of the population believes that chiropractors are basically back doctors. Chiropractic has been shown to be extremely effective in helping people with sore backs, but that is a small fraction of what it is we actually do. The avenue of approach that we take to effect a change on your body is via your spine.

A doctor of chiropractic works with the nervous system, the skeletal system, and the muscular system. The nervous system not only controls nerve impulses, but also controls hormones, chemicals, and every tissue, gland and organ in your body. Chiropractors do not claim to cure anything, what we do is keep the interference away from the spinal cord to allow the body to help itself, and function at a 100%. By allowing this system to function at it’s optimum, patients enjoy better overall health and well being. We have helped hundreds of patients with conditions such as: asthma, allergies, ear infections, bladder infections, PMS, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, chronic pain, sinus infections, childhood scoliosis and many others. Chiropractors have an effect on these conditions, and syndromes, by locating and correcting your subluxations, and keeping the interference away from your nervous system.

What are the requirements to be a chiropractor?
To receive the Doctor of Chiropractic degree, candidates must complete extensive undergraduate prerequisites and four years of graduate-level instruction at an accredited chiropractic institution. A doctor of chiropractic goes to school as long as medical doctors, the only difference is we do not study pharmacology. But do not misunderstand, if you ever needed medicine, or medical treatment, we would refer you immediately to a M.D.

Before they can practice, doctors of chiropractic must pass the National Boards as well as the licensing exam for the state in which they wish to practice. All states requires the doctors to attend continuing educational programs for annual relicensure.

Is chiropractic care really safe?
Numerous studies including several double-blind clinically randomized trials have demonstrated that chiropractic is not only safe, but produces superior results and is extremely cost effective. Doctors of Chiropractic take it one step further by performing a test that will test the patency of the arteries in the neck, making it that much safer to receive an adjustment.

The most notable studies are the 1979 New Zealand Chiropractic Report, the three year study in the 1990 British medical journal, and the Province of Ontario’s 1993 Manga Report.

Will I need to get X-rays?
It is important to understand the importance of X-Ray. Chiropractors are trained in taking and interpreting X-rays, they are also trained in specialized examination and treatment procedures. In many cases, traditional medical procedures cannot accurately diagnose common back pain.

What is that cracking noise?
A chiropractic adjustment often makes a noise. The noise is created by a gas that escapes from a joint when it is moved quickly. An adjustment takes the joint just past its normal end range of motion for a fraction of a second and, in that time, the buildup of nitrogen gas is usually released. Nothing actually cracks or breaks. If there is no popping noise, it means there was no sound from any escaping gas. You might not always hear a noise with an adjustment.

Are chiropractic adjustments painful?
A few patients experience a slight soreness when chiropractic treatment is initiated. It is important to be relaxed during the adjustment, because if you do tense up, this can contribute to the soreness. You must be comfortable with the Chiropractor, and he or she with you. There is a professional trust that develops with the patient and the Chiropractor. Most patients, however, enjoy their adjustments and look forward to them.

You may feel light pressure on your spinal joints or hear a popping sound (the result of joints opening quickly). Adjustments rarely hurt. Instead, you may have immediate relief and feel more relaxed.

How long does it take for a treatment to work?
Many patients notice significant improvement beginning with their initial treatment. A small percentage of patients may notice a little discomfort, however, as their spine adapts to the changes being made. One of the main reasons for the consultation and examination is to clearly define the cause of your health conditions. If you have misaligned vertebrae, then chiropractic can help. If that’s not what you have, we will suggest a referral to the proper health care professional.

Each person and each case is different. The length of care depends on the problem you have and its severity. We can provide a much better estimate after an examination and consultation. For most patients pain relief occurs within the first few weeks.

How long do chiropractic treatments continue?
Chiropractic should be a life-long enjoyable experience. Adjustments help to stimulate the immune system, release natural pain relievers like enkephlans, and endorphins, decrease stress on your spine and in life, and help to avoid injury, by keeping the spine flexible. After a patient’s initial examination, a program of care is established. This may run anywhere from 12-36 visits over 1-3 months, depending on the patient’s condition. Home care will be prescribed which may speed up the healing process. Then once you feel better you come in for your once a month tune-up. This is similar to putting braces on crooked teeth. After this time, most patients choose to maintain a check-up program to keep their spine healthy, free from pain and to prevent a relapse. Most patients think of this as wellness or preventive care similar to dental check-ups.

Spinal Decompression

How long would the procedure take?
The treatment takes about 30 minutes and usually takes about 20 visits to achieve the treatment goals.

How is the treatment done?
During the decompression treatment, the doctor is reducing the pressure in the disc while producing a vacuum between the vertebrae that pulls the disc back into shape allowing the annulus fibrosis to heal.
For the low back, the patient lies on his/her back or stomach on the decompression table while the neck rest comfortably on the rubber pads. Then, the doctor will put straps around the waist and lower chest while adjusting a patient’s position according to where the injury is.

Does Spinal Decompression really work?
Yes, it works. It is painless, easy and very effective to most people who experienced this treatment.

Is it expensive?
Spinal Decompression can cost anywhere from $100-$200 per visit. The total estimate would be about $2,000-$4,000. Good thing about this treatment is no surgery or down time after the surgery and the results are very good.
Is it safe for anyone?
It is suitable for anyone who have Pain due to herniated and bulging lumbar discs that is more than one month old and for patient at least 18 years of age. This treatment might not be suitable for a patient who has recent spinal fractures, surgical fusion, surgically repaired aneurysms, infection of the spine, and other conditions. Due to these exceptions, you have to talk to your doctor and see if you qualify for this treatment.

Diagnostics/NCV

How long does the NCV test take?
The test can take about 30 minutes to complete.

Is the test painful?
It is very comfortable, non-invasive and not painful.

What should a patient do before the test?
A patient should take a normal bath, but do not apply body oils, lotions, and/or cream on the day of testing. Anything applied on skin might interfere with the test results (let the doctor know so he/she can remove them before the test). Wear loose and comfortable clothing.

Can I take the test while on medication?
Most doctors advice not to take medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen or any products contain them for a minimum of 48 hours before the testing appointment. If you are on any medication, you should let the doctor performing the tests know before the test.

What can NCV test diagnose?
NCV can diagnose different disorders including ataxias, guillain-barre syndrome, metabolic myopathies, muscular dystrophy, myasthenias, nerve lesions, peripheral neuropathies, polio, spinal muscular atrophy and many other nerve disorders.

What is the difference between NCV and EMG?
The most important difference is that NCV measures how electrical signals travel through the nerves while EMG records the signals moving through the muscles.
During NCV, a doctor places stickers on the tested area, then send small amounts of electrical current to the nerves. These will feel like static electricity that you experience in the winter. While in EMG test, a doctor will place a thin needle into one or more of muscles, and then take recordings of the electrical activity in the muscle.

Headaches

Are there any headache medicines?
Some of the recommended medicines can be found over-the-counter like aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), Tylenol and Aleve. These medicines may not cure the headache, but will give a patient some relief when taken early in an attack, while the pain is still mild.

Are migraines hereditary?
Yes, a child might inherit migraine from a parent if that parent has a history of migraines. However, there is no guarantee that every child with a family history of migraine will get it. There are people with no family history of migraine, but have it.

Is there a treatment for Migraine headache?
There is no specific cure, but it is easier to treat the symptoms and avoiding any triggers. Once a person know his/her triggers, it is easy to stay away from them. See a doctor as soon as possible to make sure that you get the right treatment– a headache might mean different things.

Neck & Back Pain

What are the healthiest sleeping positions?
It is good to sleep on your side or back in order to ensure the best care for your spine. This will prevent you from getting misalignment or spinal distortion. Sleeping on your stomach creates more stress on your back and neck.

Is there any cure for neck pain?
Chiropractors can massage and adjust the neck for soft tissue injuries. Massage helps in most muscular problems related to neck and back. It can also prevent severe conditions from becoming chronic.
Decompression Therapy: this therapy is the latest in neck treatment for disc injury treatments. It utilizes traction and takes off the pressure from the back. Decompression therapy is very effective in not only treating neck pain, but also other spinal conditions as well.

What are the causes for back pain?
Aging, herniation disc, arthritis, compression fractures, and a strain are the common causes for low back pain.
When do I need to see a doctor for back pain?
It is recommended to see a doctor if your pain continues beyond few days, if the pain awakens you at night, if you have a fever and/or other symptoms.

What are the main treatments?
•Non-surgical treatment for relieving most symptoms includes resting, ice or heat patch, exercises, massage, and therapy. Medications like aspirin, naproxen and ibuprofen can reduce most pain and/or swelling.
•Spine Surgery might be necessary when other non-surgical treatment have been applied and failed. It is advised to seek a doctor’s advice before the surgery.

HCG Diet

How do the injections differ from the drops?
Drops are available but diluted and include additives so patients do not see the same success rate. The drops are not as effective as the injections. Even pure drops of HCG will still need a higher dosage for effectiveness. The only way to know you are getting true HCG is to get pure pharmacy grade quality which is exactly what you are getting with the injections HCG which is in liquid form.

How do I take the HCG injections? The nurse practitioner will supply you the injections weekly, but you will have to inject yourself daily in the midsection. The needle is very tiny and pain free.

How much will I lose?
The average weight loss can be up to one pound a day. The amount that you can lose also depends on how much you follow the diet, the treatment and some light exercises like walking, yoga and stretching.

What do I eat while on treatment?
The nurse practitioner will give you the count on calorie intake and protocol for the diet. The food choices are limited, specific and strict in order for the diet to be successful. When you start this program, the medical specialist will be able to provide you will all the information including type of food you can eat.

Are there any special requirements for handling the HCG?
The HCG needs to be refrigerated. Alcohol swabs will also be included with the HCG for hygienic reasons.
